February 13, 2020, Grand cayman, Cayman Islands
For several years now, representatives from the Batabano Board of Directors have respectfully participated, as requested, in multiple negotiations regarding carnival on Grand Cayman.
The Batabano Board of Directors and the current Batabano Mas Bands, stand firm in our position that there should not be two separate carnival parades on Grand Cayman. However, we are satisfied that the Government's current plan eliminates holding two major carnival parades on the same day on Grand Cayman and on Cayman Brac. We thank the Minister of Culture, the Hon. Dwayne Seymour, the Ministry of Culture, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF), and everyone else who played a critical role in helping come to this decision to move forward.
As we announced from May 2019, we remain happy with our original compromise of holding Junior Batabano on the first weekend of May, followed by the main Batabano parade on the second weekend of May going forward, leaving the Discovery Day weekend for Braccanal on Cayman Brac. From this plan, we have not waivered.
The public has witnessed for themselves the tremendous growth of both the junior and adult Batabano parades for generations now, and have seen the unwavering support of the Batabano Mas Bands, masqueraders, community advocates, and corporate patrons. For that we are most grateful, and together we look forward to continuing to guard and grow Grand Cayman's Batabano carnival tradition, which was first started by the visionaries of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman in 1983.
